Dicta — Privacy-First Voice Dictation
Getting Started
How to Use Dicta
- Launch Dicta — it appears as an icon in your menubar.
- Grant permissions — a guided setup window opens automatically on first launch to walk you through Microphone, Input Monitoring, and Accessibility access.
- Click in any text field — Notes, Mail, a browser, any app that accepts text.
- Hold your hotkey (default: Right Option) to start recording. You can change this in Dicta's menubar panel.
- Speak naturally.
- Release the hotkey to stop recording and insert your text.
How Dictation Works
Dicta processes all audio locally on your Mac using the Whisper speech recognition model. No internet connection required. Your words never leave your device.
Permissions
Dicta requires three macOS permissions. A guided setup window opens automatically on first launch to walk you through each step.
Microphone
Captures your voice for transcription. Dicta will prompt you automatically on first use.
Check: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone
Input Monitoring
Detects the global hotkey so Dicta can start listening when you press your chosen key.
Grant: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring → Click “+” → Add Dicta
Accessibility
Inserts dictated text into other applications by simulating a paste action.
Grant: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility → Click “+” → Add Dicta
Troubleshooting
Symptom: Pressing your hotkey does nothing — no recording starts.
Solution:
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring and ensure Dicta is listed and checked. If it is not listed, click “+” and add Dicta from your Applications folder.
- If Dicta is already listed, remove it and re-add it (this resets the permission).
- Quit and relaunch Dicta.
- Try pressing and holding the hotkey for at least half a second.
- If the issue persists after waking from sleep, quit and relaunch the app (see “Hotkey Stops After Sleep” below).
Symptom: You see Dicta processing your speech, but no text appears in the target application.
Possible causes:
- Accessibility permission not granted
- Target application does not accept text input
- Cursor is not in a text field
- Secure input field (e.g. password field) is focused
Solution:
- Ensure Dicta has Accessibility permission: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility → Dicta must be checked. If not listed, click “+” and add it.
- Click directly into a text field before dictating.
- Try a different application (e.g. Notes or TextEdit) to isolate the issue.
- If the text field is a password field, Dicta will not insert text for security reasons.
- Quit and relaunch Dicta if the problem persists.
Tips for better accuracy:
- Speak clearly and at a natural pace — avoid rushing.
- Reduce background noise — close windows, move away from fans or machinery.
- Use an external microphone if your built-in microphone picks up too much ambient noise.
- Speak in full sentences rather than isolated words — the model uses context to improve accuracy.
Symptom: Dicta does not appear in the menubar after launch.
- Check that Dicta is running — open Activity Monitor and search for “Dicta”.
- If your menubar is full, some icons may be hidden. Try expanding the menubar by holding Command and dragging icons to make space.
- Quit and relaunch the app.
Symptom: The hotkey works normally, but stops responding after your Mac wakes from sleep or after extended idle.
Workaround:
- Quit Dicta completely (right-click the menubar icon → Quit).
- Relaunch Dicta from Applications.
- The hotkey should respond immediately.
This is a known limitation of how macOS handles global event taps across sleep cycles. We are working on an automatic recovery mechanism.
Immediate solution: Force quit Dicta from Activity Monitor or by pressing Command + Option + Escape, then relaunch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an internet connection?
No. Dicta processes everything locally on your Mac. No internet connection is required.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There is no account, login, or registration. Just install and start dictating.
Is there a subscription?
No. Dicta is a one-time purchase. All future updates within the current version are included.
What languages are supported?
English only in version 1.0. British English spelling is automatically applied by default, with an option to switch to American English in settings.
How accurate is the transcription?
Dicta uses the Whisper speech recognition model, which provides high accuracy for clear speech in quiet environments. Speaking in full sentences improves results.
Why does Dicta need Accessibility permission?
Accessibility permission allows Dicta to insert dictated text directly into the application you are typing in. Without it, text insertion will not work.
Can I change the hotkey?
Yes. Click the Dicta menubar icon and use the hotkey selector to choose from presets (Right Option, Right Command, Right Control) or record a custom key combination.
Does Dicta store my recordings?
No. Audio is processed in real time and discarded immediately after transcription. Nothing is saved to disc.
